Comics · a guide
The whole long box, on one shelf.
Tomen reads comics the way it reads books: from the files you own, on the same shelf, with covers. Here is what it opens, how a page reads, and which parts are free.
What it opens
- CBZ, CBR, CBT and CB7, beside the books, each with its cover.
- An EPUB that is nothing but pictures is recognized as a comic by what is inside it, not by its name, and can be flipped between the two readers.
- A PDF becomes a comic on your device. Pages that are already images are copied straight across; pages that have to be drawn are rendered on several cores at once. Nothing is uploaded.
- A folder of pages, or a zip of them, becomes a comic the same way.
A big archive is listed from its own table of contents instead of being read whole, so a 200 MB book opens as fast as a small one.
How a page reads
Everything about the layout lives in one room of the reading menu, and every row of it is free.
- Pages: one page, a two-page spread, one long scroll for webtoons, or Auto, which picks by the screen. On a spread you can set which page comes first and whether there is a gap at the gutter.
- Direction: left to right, or right to left when that is how it was drawn.
- Fit: the whole page, the width, or the original size. Pinch into a panel and back out; a minimap shows where you are on the page while you are zoomed, and a tap on it jumps there.
- Borders: keep a scan's margins, or trim them so the art fills the frame.
- Backdrop: your theme's paper, black, or white, behind the page.
- Turn: the page-turn effect, or none.
Chapters, series and your place
A comic that carries a ComicInfo file brings its chapters: the Contents room lists them with a page thumbnail each, and a series name from that file or from the filename groups the run. Your place in a comic is kept to the page, and with Plus it follows you between devices exactly, page for page. The time left is learned from how fast you read.
What Plus adds for comics
- A bookmark on a page, kept in the Notebook with the rest of your marks.
- A library of comics in Dropbox, read in place: the whole long box on the shelf, downloading an issue only when you open it. The Calibre guide covers the same for a Calibre library.
- Your place in every comic synced between devices, with collections, pins and the finished flag.
Reading a comic, every layout, the zoom and the conversions are free. Plus is what you keep.
Getting started
- Drag a CBZ onto the shelf at read.tomen.app, or add the folder your comics live in. On Android, open a comic file with Tomen.
- Manga reads right to left: set Direction once in the Layout room and the pages and the swipe both follow.
- Coming from a reader that charged for the basics or showed ads between issues? There is nothing to switch on here; it is the same shelf as the books.
